Even in a soap opera, this would be hard to believe.
Glamorous 43-year-old Mexican telenovela star Kate del Castillo
became friends with the world’s most wanted druglord and was helping to
put together a biopic of the ruthless killer with actor Sean Penn.
The relationship between the Sinaloa Cartel leader, who has claimed to
have the blood of thousands on his hands, and the activist, and flaky,
actress apparently blossomed after she mentioned him in a rambling set
of 2012 tweets.
Shortly afterward, del Castillo was contacted by one of El Chapo’s
lawyers, according to Penn, who secretly met with the kingpin with del
Castillo’s help.
“Today I believe more in ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán than in the Governments that
hide painful truths: Those who hide the cure for AIDS and cancer for
their own benefit and to become richer,” del Castillo tweeted.
The actress, the daughter of soap opera actor Eric del Castillo, urged
the 61-year-old druglord to use his money and power for good. But he may
need some of his fortune, once estimated at $4 billion, for the
extradition process underway to bring him north to face U.S. charges.
“Mr. ‘Chapo,’ wouldn’t it be cool that you started trafficking with
love?” she asked. “With cures for diseases, with food for the homeless
children, with ALCOHOL for the retirement homes that don’t let the
elderly spend the rest of the days doing whatever the f--k they want.”
The public post ended with her calling on him to do more to protect women.
“Imagine trafficking with corrupt politicians instead of women and
children who end up as slaves,” she said. “Why don’t you burn all those
whore houses where women are worth less than a pack of cigarettes?
Without offer there’s no demand. COME ON Don! You would be the HEROES of
HEROES! Let’s traffic with love. YOU KNOW HOW TO. Life is a business,
and the only thing that changes is the merchandise. Don’t you agree?”
The unlikely friends then communicated via BlackBerry Messenger with
the killer famous for gunning down even close associates for minor
transgressions.
Del Castillo began her movie career when she was 6, but her career only
took off after she starred in two popular telenovelas starting in 2007 —
including one in which she plays a drug cartel leader.
More recently, she performed in three episodes of the CW show “Jane the
Virgin” and was cast in “The 33,” a movie about the Chilean miners who
were trapped for 69 days in 2010.
Del Castillo has involved herself in politics before.
In 2009, she was named ambassador for the Mexican Commission on Human Rights.
In that capacity, she started the Blue Heart Campaign, a movement to highlight the plight of human-trafficking victims.
