The 24-year-old Cameroon international is set
to arrive on Merseyside in the summer once his contract with the Bundesliga
side expires.
It is claimed he will pen a
four-year deal at Anfield.
The German-born player, who can
operate in a holding midfield role as well as in central defence, has 27
Cameroon caps and came through the Schalke youth academy Matip made his Bundesliga debut at
the age of 18, scoring in a 1-1 draw with Bayern
Munich in November 2009, and has over 200 senior club appearances to his
name.
The Reds' interest in the defender
has been known since January, although Schalke had not given up hope he would
sign a new deal at the German club.
At least two French clubs were also
thought to be in the running, but Liverpool was his chosen destination and the
move set to go ahead after penning a pre-contract agreement with the Premier League side.
