Arsenal have fallen well
behind the world’s biggest clubs and MUST start getting serious in the
transfer market to close the gap.
That’s the verdict of their double-winning former captain Frank McLintock after the Gunners crashed out of
the Champions League at the last 16 stage for the sixth
successive year with a 5-1 aggregate defeat to Barcelona.
Luis Suarez, a player
Arsenal missed out on signing in 2013 after they failed to meet Liverpool’s
valuation, was among Barca’s goalscorers and McLintock claims Arsene Wenger’s
reluctance to pay inflated transfer fees on the likes of the Uruguayan has
proved damaging to the club long-term.
Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, McLintock
said: “We were in for Suarez - £40million and one pound they put in and
they lost the deal. What a chance for us to go in and say to Liverpool ‘£45million’. They were 99 per cent
certain of getting him for that.
“He is just one example of players we have missed out on.
You don’t get these type of players coming along every day and you are capable
of buying them. He is worth about £80million now.
“Arsenal now, with the money they have got, have got move to
along. We have got to challenge as if we ARE one of the top teams in
the world, not just an also-ran.
“We are well behind the four or five top teams in the
world.”
