Actress Margot Robbie is lacing up her skates to play bad girl Tonya Harding.
Following her villainous role in the “Suicide Squad,” the blonde beauty
has been cast to portray the disgraced Olympian in upcoming film “I,
Tonya,” Entertainment Weekly reported.
Aside from delivering the infamous whack heard round the world, the
actress is pushing hard for the flick. She will be pulling double duty
by working as a producer, and is determined to find a director, according to Dateline.
The flick, penned by “Kate and Leopold” writer Steven Rogers is set to document the tumultuous life of the fallen ice princess.
Despite her difficult upbringing, Harding rose to athletic stardom in
the early 1990s. She became the first American woman to complete the
triple axel in major competitions in 1991.
The rising star, pegged as a favorite for the 1994 Winter Olympics,
fell from grace when her ex-husband orchestrated an attack on rival and
skating darling Nancy Kerrigan.
Kerrigan was leaving rehearsal when she was clubbed in the leg by
someone hired by Harding's ex Jeff Gillolly and one of her bodyguards.
Harding, 45, still denies any role in the ambush. She pleaded guilty in
March 1994 to conspiring to hinder prosecution and was let off with
three years' probation.
The notorious skater was ultimately banned from the U.S. Figure Skating Association for life.
No word yet on who will play Kerrigan but the Robbie’s announcment
comes on the heels of “American Horror Story” star Sarah Paulson voicing
her desire to play Harding.
"I'm sort of interested in the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan thing. I
would like to play Tonya Harding, I'm just putting that out there," she told People magazine on Monday.
“I've got the skating skills and the bangs and the hair. I'm really into
the hair thing. Half the job is the hair. I've done that once before,
and now I feel like it suits me,” she added.
