NITA, GNA to Introduce Mobile Digital Television

The National Information Technology Agency (NITA) and the Ghana News Agency are collaborating to introduce the first ever Mobile Digital TV in Ghana.

 

The project, which is set to take off in a few weeks, is aimed at improving the value proposition of both institutions.

Dr Bernard Otabil, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GNA announced this on Friday at a ceremony in Accra to mark the 59th anniversary of the Agency.

Mobile TV is simply an applet which users can upload on their Mobile phones just like whatsapp or youtube. A simple tap on the App will direct the user to the LIVE TV studio of NITA and GNA to be hosted at the National Data Center. This TV App will offer Ghanaians 24/7 live TV news programming anywhere and everywhere.

Dr Otabil explained that NITA would provide the technology solution, both equipment and software, whilst GNA would provide the content.

He said in addition to this collaboration, NITA and GNA were on the verge of developing Ghana’s foremost search engine, infoghana.com.gh, similar to google and yahoo.

He indicated that the project would involve the digitization of all the archives of Ghana, including newspapers, video and audio files as well as regular paper documents, and make them searchable on the internet by a simple click of a mouse.

“By doing so, one may no longer need to ‘ransack’ MDAs for information. Indeed one can be anywhere, whether home, office or bedroom, and still have access to a 1952 newspaper or a 1990 GTV news Bulletin or even the ruling of a 1950 court case or statistical records from the statistical service of Bank of Ghana –  truly, real time information”, the CEO said.

The Ghana News Agency is the foremost news agency in sub-Saharan Africa. Set up on the eve of the country’s independence, March 5, 1957, by Dr Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, the Agency played a key role in the early days of the liberation struggle in Africa, and helped in the promotion and development of African institutions, not least the OAU which later became the AU.

The National Information Technology Agency (NITA) was established under ACTs of Parliament 771 and 772 to be the IT implementing arm of Government and also the regulator of the ICT space in Ghana.
