It has a good beat and you can push to it.
A Manhattan OB-GYN has teamed up with Spotify, the music streaming service, to deliver the perfect playlist for giving birth.
“Music strongly influences our central nervous system’s limbic system
which manages our memories, emotions, and how we deal with fear and
pain,” said Dr. Jacques Moritz.
There are over 90,000 “Push Playlists” according to Spotify. Moritz
reports that 70% of his patients rely on music to help get them through
labor.
“It makes sense that women would turn to music during childbirth as a
source of comfort and strength,” he said. “In addition, hospitals,
particularly delivery rooms, can be noisy and disconcerting — a good
playlist helps distract mothers from these sounds and better manage fear
and pain, leading to a more positive delivery experience."
Moritz’ playlist keeps pace with the stages of labor. It starts with
mellow songs, then segues into those with a stronger beat when it is
time to push.
There’s a great cross-section of artists from Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” to The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey.”
Coldplay’s “Don’t Panic" and Pink’s “Try” are in the middle stages of
labor. R.E.M.’s “Nightswimming” and Beyonce’s “Blue” help toward the
very end.
And when the moms meet their babies, the music transitions to Bach’s “Unaccompanied Cello Suite #1” played by Yo-Yo Ma.
For those who want to pick their own music, Moritz offers these tips:
- Choose comforting and familiar music so that the woman is as relaxed as she can be.
- Pick instrumentals because lyrics can be distracting when the woman needs to concentrate.
- Stock up. Plan on at least five hours, though 10 hours is better, especially for first-time moms.
- The playlist should be beautiful and make a woman feel that way.
Babies can hear in the womb so the doctor advises making sure these memories are lovely for all.
