Kesha said Sunday that she was finally offered her "freedom" amid her
contentious, ongoing fight to break her contract with Sony — but only if
she agreed to say she was never raped.
"I got offered my freedom IF i were to lie," the singer wrote on Instagram. "I would have to APOLOGIZE publicly and say that I never got raped. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS behind closed doors."
It wasn't immediately clear if Kesha, who claims Sony's top producer
Dr. Luke drugged and raped her a decade ago, was specifically referring
to the record label in her post, though she went on to say there's no
way she'd throw away her allegations just to reach a settlement.
"I will not take back the TRUTH," she continued in the post. "I would
rather let the truth ruin my career than lie for a monster ever again."
The "Tik Tok" singer is fighting to terminate the remainder of her
six-album deal with Sony because she claims it put her in contract with
Dr. Luke, whose real name is Lucasz Gottwald, in the first place.
A Manhattan Supreme Court judge ruled in February, however, that the 29-year-old singer couldn't break the contract.
A spokesperson for the producer said Kesha's claims were not true.
"Kesha's Instagram posting is false," the spokesperson said. "The Court
repeatedly stated Kesha is already free to record without Dr. Luke, and
that she had not presented any facts supporting her claims. That's
because all the evidence — including Kesha's own videotaped sworn
testimony — show her allegations are false.
"The only thing Kesha is not free to do is to continue to lie about Dr.
Luke through publicity stunts and outrageous smears, ignoring the fact
that by her own free will she went to work and entered new contracts
with Dr. Luke years after this "incident" supposedly happened."
Sony has reportedly offered to allow Kesha to work with a different
producer, but she's concerned her music wouldn't be promoted as heavily
if she collaborated with someone other than the label's biggest
hit-maker.
Kesha's mother, meanwhile, recently claimed Gottwald treated her daughter like a "prisoner" throughout their years working together.
"It was like someone who beats you every day and hangs you from a chain
and then comes in and gives you a piece of bread," Pebe Sebert told
Billboard last month. "Luke would say, 'You look nice today,' and send
her into hysterics of happiness because she was programmed to expect
nothing but abuse."
Kesha has received a wave of support from other celebrities in recent
months, including singer Lady Gaga, who has posted a number of
empowering social media messages about Kesha and defended the "Blow"
artist in interviews.
Similarly, Taylor Swift donated $250,000 to help Kesha out financially
during her fight, while other stars such as Adele, Anne Hathaway, Lorde
and Reese Witherspoon have voiced their support as well.
