Who is an Optometrist?
Optometrists are healthcare professional with a Doctor of Optometry
(OD) degree who provide primary vision care ranging from sight testing and
correction to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of vision changes with
glasses, contact lenses or even exercises. An optometrist has also been trained
to diagnose, treat and manage eye diseases. An optometrist often collaborates
with an ophthalmologist to provide the pre- and post-op care to an eye-surgery
patient, though an optometrist will not perform the actual surgery.
Who is an Ophthalmologist?
An ophthalmologist is a trained medical doctor who has earned an MD
(Medical Doctor) degree and goes on to specialise in surgery of the eyes. Thus,
an ophthalmologist is licensed to surgically invade the eye. While an ophthalmologist can prescribe glasses
and contact lenses, his primary focus is treating and managing ocular diseases
as well as performing surgical procedures on the eyes.
Who is an Optician?
Opticians
are technicians trained to design, verify and fit eyeglass lenses and frames and other devices to correct eyesight. They
use prescriptions supplied by ophthalmologists or optometrists, but do not test
vision or write prescriptions for visual correction. Opticians are not
permitted to diagnose or treat eye diseases.
