SANRAL e-toll discount deadline extended, says Outa

THE Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) on Friday said the extension of a 60% discount offer on outstanding e-toll debt was to be expected.

The civil society group said the South African National Roads Agency Limited’s (Sanral’s) "recent legal summonsing of a few handpicked e-toll defaulters" — which it described as "an attempt to spook the public" — appeared to have failed.

"The uptake has been far too low to convert the scheme to a sustainable one‚" Outa said in a statement‚ adding that Sanral "has been forced to extend the period … in an attempt to claw back a bit more of the R5.9bn … debt".

The deadline for the discount offer was Tuesday but was extended for 10 working days.
Earlier this week Sanral said a large number of motorists had taken up the offer, but it did not divulge figures, saying it was still crunching numbers. That evoked a sceptical response from civil society groups including Outa and Justice Project South Africa.

Outa said its own "membership has continued growing by several thousands over the last few weeks and we are encouraged by the amount of organisations and citizens outside our membership base who are choosing to defend themselves against the summons".
