Transnet changes group executive team

THE state-owned freight and logistics group Transnet has made some changes to its group executive team as its newly appointed CEO Siyabonga Gama looks to "capturing new opportunities in the market".
This comes as Transnet embarks on a major expansion drive in the rest of the continent in a bid to offset a slowdown at home caused by the slump in commodity prices.

Gama was officially confirmed as Transnet head in April, following months of speculation. He had been acting CEO since Brian Molefe was seconded to power utility Eskom and was officially appointed as its CEO last year. Previously, Gama was CE of Transnet Freight Rail, the group’s largest division.
Former Transnet chief financial officer Anoj Singh was seconded with Molefe to Eskom. He was later officially replaced at Transnet by Gary Pita.

On Wednesday, Gama announced that Mlamuli Buthelezi had been appointed group chief operating officer. He previously held the same position at Transnet Freight Rail. Buthelezi will be responsible for driving "an integrated operational philosophy" across the various divisions at Transnet.
Under the new model revealed by Gama, the chief executives of Transnet’s other divisions will now report to Buthelezi. These include Karl Socikwa of port terminals, Sharla Chetty of pipelines, Richard Vallihu of the ports authority, and Thabo Lebelo of property. Also included is Ravi Nair, the newly-confirmed head of Transnet Freight Rail, who had been in the position in an acting capacity.

Transnet general manager for group planning, Krishna Reddy is now chief capital officer.
Other executives seem to have had only a change of title, with Thamsanqa Jiyane now chief advances manufacturing officer. He was previously Transnet Engineering chief executive. Nonkululeko Sishi is now chief human resources officer, from group executive for human resources, and Disebo Moephuli is chief corporate and regulatory officer, a change from chief risk officer.
A new appointment effective from June is that of Makano Mosidi, the chief information officer. Mosidi has extensive experience in the ICT sector and was previously public sector executive at Dimension Data Middle-East and Africa.
Gama said the new group executive committee will be supported by Mmathabo Sukati, the chief audit executive, Shulami Qalinge, the group executive for strategy as well as group company secretary Ayanda Ceba.

Gama said excluding the positions of group CEO and CFO, there was 50% gender split across the company’s group executive committee.
"In short, we are reshaping the core of our business along with our aspirations and strategic thrusts of being agile, admired, digital and united," said Gama. "It is heartening to note that this exercise demonstrates once more the wealth of extraordinary leadership talent we can choose from among our colleagues."
Transnet, which operates nearly three-quarters of all Africa’s rail network, is opening offices in West and East Africa and is looking to deploy its expertise in running ports and pipelines as well as rail.
