Alliances are forged and fangs are sharpened in the second episode of "UnReal."
Lifetime's deliciously bitchy scripted show about a reality show has
battle lines drawn in front of and behind the camera. Those behind the
camera are meaner and far more fun.
There's a huge fight for control of "Everlasting" the
show-within-a-show. Chet, who took credit for creating it, and Quinn,
who was the showrunner and the actual creator, are locked in a death
battle. They (Constance Zimmer, Craig Bierko) despise each other with
the hatred that comes from once having been lovers and knowing every
last annoying fault of the other person.
To ensure she's victorious, Quinn grabs the show back from her protege Rachel (Shiri Appleby).
Among the 26 women prancing about in bikinis and fawning over "The
Suitor" Darius (B.J. Britt) - the show's version of "The Bachelor" - is
Ruby, a black activist chosen to fight with Beth Ann (Denee Benton,
Lindsay Musil), a white racist. Ruby becomes particularly disgusted that
Darius is gallant to Beth Ann.
It turns out Beth Ann loves football and particularly Darius, a hot
quarterback. She's upset she wore the Confederate flag bikini, so doffs
her top - on camera. Darius takes off his shirt to cover her,
infuriating Ruby.
Ruby now realizes she made a huge mistake by dropping out of college
and appeals to Jay (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman), an associate producer, fed
up with Rachel. Jay advises Ruby to listen only to him; he will steer
her right.
Other contestants are finagling for precisely that sort of help and
some are willing to do anything, including sexual favors for Darius'
entourage.
Yael (Monica Barbaro) cozies up to Rachel. Yael's known among the crew
as "hot Rachel” and tries playing the Jewish card with Rachel, asking
her to "help a sister out."
Unmoved, Rachel advises Yael to heed the assistant producer on set.
Knowing she needs an edge, Yael later pretends to trip into the pool and
feigns drowning, prompting Darius to dive in to save her. He carries
her out of the water as the poor damsel in distress cuddles up to him.
Incidentally, that poor damsel was a champion swimmer for Sarah
Lawrence.

As the women try to make themselves stand out, Quinn and Chet are so
disgusted with each other they each decide to make a show. Whichever the
network honchos like better wins.
Quinn is positive she will be victorious because she's ran the show
while Chet pondered big ideas. He's going for sex and she's after the
fairy tale ending.
As they fight and run the crew ragged, Rachel gets the bright idea to
go behind her mentor's back and approach the network head, Gary
(Christopher Cousins). She rats out Quinn and Chet.
Gary listened but instead of putting Rachel in charge, as she had
hoped, he brings in Coleman (Michael Rady), ticking off Quinn, Chet and
Rachel. But Rachel sits with Coleman and the seeds of a new alliance are
planted.
