The
State Chairman of NMA , Dr Aniekeme Aniefiok Uwah in company of his
exco and other stakeholders paid a courtesy call on the Speaker Akwa
Ibom State house of Assembly, Rt Hon(Barr) Onofiok Luke yesterday at the
Assembly complex, Uyo.
In his speech , Dr Aniekeme Uwah stated that the aim of the courtesy visit was to bring to the notice of the assembly, issues affecting the welfare of doctors and to draw the attention of the Assembly to legislations and policies needed to enhance health care delivery in Akwa Ibom State.
Dr Uwah who is
also chairman of NMA south, requested the House of Assembly to intervene
in areas where its members were owed backlog of salary arrears of two
years and beyond.
The Dr Aniekeme Uwah noted that association was conscious
of the fact that the Government can not do it all alone hence its
seeking of partnership of the AKHA to pass bills that will be of immense
benefit to the citizenry.
Proposed were, The passage of Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Bill.
The Akwa Ibom State Health Care Waste Management Agency Bill.
The Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Scheme Bill
A bill to ban the
hawking of uncertified health and herbal products including services on
our streets, markets etc and dissemination of false information.
A bill for the provision of paternal leave for men in Akwa Ibom State.
And The implementation of the national health bill,2014:
In his response,
the Speaker AKHA, Rt Hon Onofiok Luke accepted to Partner with the NMA
to ensure that qualitative health care delivery is given to the people
of Akwa Ibom State.
Hon Onofiok Luke
encouraged The NMA to sponsor private member bills that provide enabling
environment for best medical practice in the state. He decried the
state of primary health care delivery in the state noting that most
cases at the tertiary hospitals would have been checkmated if primary
health care of qualitative.
He called on the
NMA to be part of the free medical out reach which will be embarked on
by members of the assembly in no distant time.
The speaker
called for the observation of one minute silence in honour of Late Dr
Ivy Umana who was assassinated in controversial circumstances while
urging the security agencies to fish out perpetrators of such act while
ensuing security for doctors and other members of the public.
He led members of the association on inspection of the Assembly clinic requesting NMA to help put the facility to optimum use.
Other Members
present were Rt Hon Aniekan Uko member representing Ibesikpo/Asutan
State constituency and Hon Dennis Akpan member representing Etinan State
constituency in the Assembly.
It would be
recalled the new NMA administration as part of programs to mark its
first 30days in office carried out the ground breaking for the VIP
lounge of the Ultra modern doctors mess in Uyo.
