The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State Branch has
requested for the establishment of a general hospital in Uyo to cater
for the increasing population of residents in the state capital.

This
demand was made by AK NMA chairman, Doctor Aniekeme Uwah during the
opening ceremony of Physicians' Week 2016 at NMA house Uyo.
Dr Uwah who
gave the opening remarks at the event called on the Akwa Ibom State
house of Assembly to expedite the passage of state health insurance
bills for the benefit of the people. The Akwa Ibom State Deputy
Governor, Mr Moses Ekpo (MFR) who was the guest of honour , stated that
the state government had already concluded plans to equip some hospitals
across the state with state of the arts facilities to address the
medical challenges experienced in health care delivery.

Ekpo challenged the doctors to be responsive to their professional oath
and avoid undue strike actions, noting that it affects the lives they
were meant to serve. He assured that the Governor Udom Emmanuel led
administration was poised to support the health care sector in the
state, to meet international standards. The maiden edition of a
quarterly magazine "Doctor On Call" was launched at the event as well as
a website for NMA Akwa Ibom Branch.
As part of events to mark the week, medical doctors in Akwa ibom had earlier embarked on a road work to remind the Federal Government of the need to implement the national health act signed into law since 2014 . The medical doctors under the aegis of AK NMA also embarked on three days free medical our reach at health center ikot ekpeyak , ikono , Uyo where surgical operations and other treatment were given to the community free of charge. The Physicians' week will be rounded up on October 30 with a novelty football match between the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
The theme for this year's physicians' week is "Health Care Delivery in a Frail Economy: Challenges and way forward" .
