A woman who went missing along with her boyfriend was found “chained
like a dog” at a South Carolina home and a registered sex offender has
been arrested in connection with the investigation, police said.
Kala Brown, 30, was found in a storage container after officials heard
banging that led police to her rescue at a property in Spartanburg
County Thursday, Sheriff Chuck Wright told WYFF4.
Brown had been kept in the container with a chain around her neck for
about two months since her disappearance on Aug. 31, he said.
Wright said Brown told investigators that four bodies are possibly
buried on the property and a massive investigation is underway,
according to NBC News.
Investigators found weapons and ammunition when they searched the
property, leading Wright to believe a serial killer was on the run.
Todd Kohlhepp, 45, who is a registered sex offender, was arrested and
charged with kidnapping, Wright told WYFF4, adding that he and Brown
shared a possible connection.
Kohlhepp was convicted in 1987 of kidnapping the 16-year-old in
Arizona, according to the South Carolina Public Sex Offender Registry.
Brown's boyfriend, Charlie Carver, 32, was last seen on surveillance video leaving work on Aug. 31, the station reported.
Carver dated Brown for several months and was in the process of getting a divorce from his wife, their mothers said in a Dateline interview.
He is still missing.
After she was missing for more than a month, Brown’s mother suspected
something was wrong since her daughter had not updated her Facebook page
and Carver’s profile picture was changed on Sept.6, accompanied by
mysterious posts.
