America’s top profession is a real jaw dropper.
Dentists — guardians of the oral galaxy — have the best job in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2017 Best Jobs Rankings released Wednesday.
Coming in second is nurse practitioner, followed by physician
assistant, statistician and orthodontist — which clocked in at No. 1 in
2016. Dentists held the top slot a year prior.
U.S. News includes jobs on its annual rankings based on which have the
greatest hiring demand — or highest projected number of 2014 to 2024 job
openings — per U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
Jobs are scored on seven measures including median salary, employment
rate, future job prospects, work-life balance and stress level.
As for the best-paying jobs, anesthesiologist led the pack with a mean
salary of $258,100 — trailed by surgeon ($247,520), oral and
maxillofacial surgeon ($233,900), OB-GYN ($222,400), and orthodontist
($221,390).
Sensing a common thread among all these top-ranking professions?
Fifty-two of the top 100 jobs, in fact, were in the health care field.
“Health care jobs often require a human element, so they can’t be
exported or entirely replaced by robots — at least not yet,” said U.S.
News personal finance editor Susannah Snider, adding that people could
“pursue a range of health care positions that require varying levels of
skill and education.”
The media company further revealed that New York City — compared to
other U.S. cities — is one of the highest paying cities to be a
psychologist ($128,000) or an art director ($130,350).
