According to a World Bank report, Nigerian women account for about
42% of the total labour force. This number has reduced gradually from
the peak of 43% in 2004. This is due to the pressure for women to manage
the homefront in addition to the limited level of education that they
are exposed to. This under-representation is also reflected in
owner-businesses as fewer women account for business owners.

Statistics
show that pressure to manage the home, lack of business knowledge,
fear of exploring uncharted areas, risk aversion and limitation in
accessing capital are a few of the prevailing limitations for women
business –owners. However, a World Bank report states that promoting
women’s access to gainful employment can unleash a strong force for
innovation, productivity, and economic growth in any country.
This
year, the Bank of Industry seeks to empower women entrepreneurs through
its International Women’s Day Programme. With a charge to “Be Bold for Change”, BOI is gathering notable Nigerians like:
- Kofo Akinkugbe (Founder/CEO SECURE ID)
- Affiong Williams ( Founder/CEO Reel Fruit)
- Bolanle Austeen – Peters (Founder/CEO Terraculture)
- Wasiu Taiwo (CEO Wessy Creations)
- Pamela Ajayi (CEO Pathcare Laboratories)
Who
have dared to succeed despite challenges in the Nigerian economy. These
women will share their experiences in their various journeys to success
in the hope that they will empower other women with the tools required
to take that bold step in their business aspirations.
The session,
which will also serve as a networking platform, will expose the
audience to BOI’s array of products specifically targeted at women.
