Michelle Obama wrote a college recommendation letter for 'Black-ish' star Yara Shahidi

Former First Lady Michelle Obama wrote a college recommendation letter for Yara Shahidi, the “Black-ish” star revealed in W Magazine.

“She is very amazing and such a supporter, which is something very surreal to say,” the 17-year-old actress, who plans to double-major in African American studies and sociology, said.
Former President Barack Obama also gave her a “go get ‘em, tiger” before her Advanced Placement exams.

Shahidi, who plays Zoey Johnson on the wildly successful ABC show, said last year that she plans to defer college for at least a year — just like Malia Obama.

It’s more than to just roam around or just sit down and stare at a wall, but it will also give me an opportunity to work,” she told People.

“I’ve been working more than half of my life and that’s always been balanced with school and all of the other responsibilities, so to have a year to focus on work and to focus on specified interests will be nice before I pick a career and choose what I want to study and my life path.”
Until then, Shahidi is in talks to star in a rumored “Black-ish” spinoff that would follow Zoey in college, according to Deadline.

Larry Wilmore, who served as the executive producer and showrunner for the first 13 episodes, is on board with series creator Kenya Barris.
