Soon, you may no longer need to sniff your milk to see if it’s gone bad.
Food is getting smarter — actually, the packaging is.
Irish scientists have developed printed transistors that may be used
down the road for labels that send alerts on the freshness status of
food and drinks, according to new research published in the journal, Science.
The packaging will provide answers to everyday questions, like — Is the milk still fresh? Or, Is the white wine chilled?
Led by nanotechnologist Jonathan Coleman, an international research
team at Trinity College in Dublin is working to devise packaging
breakthroughs that will let products get smart speak for themselves.
(Move over, Alexa.)
“All of this is a long way off in the future,” said Coleman, “but it is
imaginable that at some point, milk cartons could send messages to your
phone warning that the milk is about to reach its sell-by-date.”
In the meantime, the sniff test is pretty reliable.
