MTV is planning a return to its old priorities and refocusing on music, network president Chris McCarthy told Adweek.
His plan revolves around a “TRL” knockoff called “MTV Live,” a three-
to four-hour afternoon broadcast from the iconic Times Square studio.
“That ability to be live, in culture — not responding to it but driving it — is where we belong,” McCarthy told Adweek.
“Total Request Live” ran for more than 2,200 episodes from 1998 to 2008, primarily hosted by Carson Daly.
After he left in 2003 to host his own talk show, MTV introduced a
rotation of VJs, including Damien Fahey, Hilarie Burton, Vanessa
Minnillo, Quddus, La La Vasquez and Susie Castillo.
The show ended on Nov. 13, 2008 with Seth Green and The All-American
Rejects, followed by a three-hour special three days later with
Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Nelly, Beyoncé, 50 Cent, Fall Out Boy, Backstreet
Boys, Justin Timberlake, Kid Rock, JC Chasez, Christina Aguilera, Travis
Barker, Taylor Swift, Hilary Duff, Eminem and Korn's Jonathan Davis.
A one-day revival in July 2014 featured Sway and Ariana Grande.
“MTV Live” is scheduled to debut on June 12.
