Alex Kurtzman's first installment in the Universal Monsters shared
universe, "The Mummy," appears to boast some neat characters — real and
supernatural.
Its latest trailer, released April 2, features frenetic action and a
villain who appears to be fleshed out nicely — all to the tune of "Paint
it Black."
The film is a reboot of "The Mummy" franchise and features perennial
action star Tom Cruise as Nick Morton, along with the talented Russell
Crowe as a modern-day Dr. Henry Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. The film also stars
Sofia Boutella as The Mummy/Princess Ahmanet, and "Peaky Blinders'"
Annabelle Wallis as Jenny Halsey.
With captivating visuals and a narrative rooted in mythology,
Kurtzman's film could be a great start to Universal's slate of monster
films.
In the trailer, the first seconds show a high-stakes battle scene where
Cruise's Nick Morton and another get pulled into the impact area of an
explosion. There, Nick discovers a large sarcophagus showing a mummy's
face.
"Whatever's in there, has been safely hidden for 2,000 years," Wallis' Jenny Halsey says. "This isn't a tomb, it's a prison."
Jenny then explains that the entombed person was named Ahmanet, who was
set to be Egypt's next queen. "But her thirst for power led her down a
darker path. One that had to be stopped."
Crowe's Dr. Jekyll says, "Because of your actions, this ancient power
has returned." Nick is shown aboard a flight carrying the tomb which
gets infiltrated by a flock of birds and badly damaged. It is last seen
crashing toward the earth.
Nick then wakes up, with Jekyll telling him, "You are alive, because you were chosen. [By]evil. The ultimate evil."
"Legend has it, she's a being of unimaginable powers,” Jenny says. "Now she's using you, to regain them."
Ahmanet is then shown in chains — but she quickly overpowers her captors.
"She will not stop until she has remade our world, into her own," Jekyll warns.
Then, Jenny gets pulled under water by the supernatural being.
"You can't run. You can't escape. She's got plans for you," Jake Johnson's Sgt. Vail says near the trailer’s end.
