On Tuesday, Google is using its logo for not one, but two special
occasions. In the U.S., Google pays tribute to Teachers Day with an
adorable interactive showing a teacher (in this case, the second "g" in
the logo), instructing the class on subjects including chemistry and
astronomy.
According to the National Education Association,
Congress declared a National Teacher Day on March 7, 1980, but the
organization changed it to the Tuesday of the first full week of May.
If
you are accessing Google in Canada, Australia, and parts of Europe and
Latin America, you're greeted with a clever homage to Ferdinand Monoyer,
one of France's most famous ophthalmologists. Tuesday marks his 181st
birthday.
Monoyer invented the diopter, a unit of measurement that determines
the distance someone must be from a text to read it. He also created the
famous eye chart you see in ophthalmology offices everywhere, when you
cover your eye to read rows of random letters.
Google says hidden within the chart is Monoyer's name.
