HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY!

Democracy Day held annually on May 29 in Nigeria commemorates the restoration of democracy in Nigeria, when the newly elected Olusegun Obasanjo took office as the President of Nigeria in May 1999. This ended multiple decades of military rule that began in 1966 and had been interrupted only by a brief period of #democracy from 1979 to 1983.

Here is an excerpt from a speech by Acting President Prof Yemi Osinbajo to mark this years Democracy Day: "Nigeria belongs to all of us. No one person or group of persons is more important or more entitled than the other in this space that we all call home.

And we have a responsibility to live in peace and harmony with one another, to seek peaceful and constitutional means of expressing our wishes and desires, and to resist all who might seek to sow confusion and hatred for their own selfish interests….

Nigeria is on a journey of greatness, and together we shall arrive at the destination of our dream." Prof Yemi Osinbajo
