The “Believe” singer announced Tuesday night that a musical based on her life will hit Broadway next year.
"Just got off phone w/writer & director of musical,” she tweeted.
“There will (be) performance in theatre with actors, dancers, singers!!
It'll (be) on Broadway 2018."
According to a casting notice in November, “Avenue Q” and “Pitch Perfect” director Jason Moore is leading the project.
“Jersey Boys” writer Rick Elice is also attached, as well as “War Paint” choreographer Christopher Gattelli.
“In this production, the characters of BABE, LADY, and STAR represent
Cher at different moments of her life — starting as a teenager who falls
for Sonny Bono (BABE), a successful music star navigating the
challenges of the entertainment industry (LADY) and the lady we know
today with a fascinating wealth of life experience, successes, and
failures (STAR),” the notice read, according to Playbill.
The show also called for characters including Cher’s parents, Bob
Mackie, David Geffen, Gregg Allman, Robert Altman, Rob Camilletti and
Sigmund Freud.
A reading of the show in January earned Cher’s stamp of approval.
"I sobbed & laughed, & I was prepared not 2like it. Audience
clapped after songs, & gave it standing ovation,” she tweeted at the
time.
The 71-year-old singer’s legendary career dates back to 1962, when she began working as a backup singer for Phil Spector.
She and Sonny Bono launched their careers together with hit singles “I
Got You Babe,” “The Beat Goes On” and “All I Ever Need Is You.”
Cher moved to television in the ’70s before launching a comeback at the end of the decade.
A film career filled another musical break before she returned to the stage.
