Yesterday, June 12th was the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) World Day Against Child Labour. It focuses attention on the global extent of #child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. According to a UNICEF fact sheet, a staggering 15 million Nigerian children under the age of 14 are working across the country.
Children are forced to work part time or skip class in order to pay for school fees and books. Many drop out of school altogether due to poverty or to boost their family’s meager income. Working children in rural areas engage in activities such as agriculture and hunting, while those in towns tend to be street hawkers or apprenticed to artisans. Most start working between the ages of 5 and 9.
We must all fight against child labour in Nigeria. Do you employ a child that ought to be in school?
You owe it to them to pay for their education.
Does a child drop off YOUR child in school, do chores all day, pick up your child from school and care for them whilst you are at work? We all know families who employ house helps/nannies that ought to be looked after themselves.
Let us give our children the opportunity to grow in grace and to be educated.
They are our only hope.
They are our future.
