Coca-Cola Coffee Plus launches in Japan

Coca-Cola Coffee Plus has been dreamed up by the mad mixologists at the soft drink giant.

It’s just the drink ticket for caffeine addicts who can’t decide if they want to get a jolt from Coke or java, since it blends both.

This way they can have both in one can. At least if you’re Japan.

That’s where the beverage is sold exclusively in vending machines, according to the website extracrispy.com.
Cans of the mash-up thirst quencher look like typical Coke containers, expect for three little coffee beans set against the red background. Each 6.4-ounce can packs 34 milligrams of caffeine, the same as a 12-ounce can of Coke. By comparison, a 12-ounce (“tall”) Starbucks iced coffee has 120 milligrams.

Beyond the jolt factor, a Japanese taste-tester noted, “To be frank, it’s not a very delicious aroma ... but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.”
How do you say “damning with faint praise” in Japanese?

This isn’t Coca-Cola’s first coffee-flavored Coke. In 2006, the company introduced the U.S. to Coca-Cola Blak.
“Imagine the refreshing taste of an ice-cold Coca-Cola that finishes with a rich essence of coffee,” was the promotional pitch. The product was discontinued two years after its release.

But if you’re craving a coffee soft drink and you’re not in Japan, you’re not totally out of luck. A Manhattan Special could do the trick. The espresso soda, which has been around since 1895, just got a label makeover. Look for it at your neighborhood bodega, deli or bagel store.
“We have satisfied loyal consumers with our family’s secret recipe for over 100 years,” the company boasts on its site.
