Ghana's first Social Media Week, was launched this week in Accra. SMW seeks to bring together stakeholders to brainstorm on how to use social media as a tool to promote and develop businesses and the nation.
Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter are great for discussing contemporary issues,
promoting business, sharing photos, staying in touch etc, but there is a downside.
With all that information online comes real dangers to personal & financial security. The vast majority of cases of identity theft were from footprints left online. We're all vulnerable.
Stay abreast of safety tips and protect yourself while enjoying social media.
Here are some tips:
1. Having many followers may sound great, but be selective of the personal details you make available online. You can set your profile to private if it makes sense.
2. Social media passwords should be unique, and different for each account so if one is compromised, your profiles on others won’t be affected.
3. Smartphones are lost/stolen everyday. A password or thumbprint verification can help lock it to protect personal information.
4. Think before you post. Sometimes your posts may reveal more than you intended and compromise your security.
