If you’ve got an oval Modigliani-like mug, you’re not as likely to get lucky as someone with a square face.
So says a provocative new Canadian study that
found that that people with shorter, wider faces tend to have stronger
sex drives than those with faces of other dimensions.
(Okay, now that you’ve checked out yourself in the mirror, keep reading.)
To reach their conclusions, lead author and psychology professor Steven Arnocky, Ph.D., and colleagues at Nipissing University in Canada conducted two separate studies focusing on facial width to height ratio (fWHR).
In one, researchers surveyed 145 undergraduates about sex drive and
compared responses with pictures of participants faces’ width-to-height
ratios.
In the second study, an expansion of the first, 314 students were
queried about sexual orientation, infidelity and willingness to have sex
outside a committed relationship.
For both men and women, a higher facial width to height ratio — that
is, wider cheekbones and shorter distances between the brow and the
upper lip — reported higher sex drives than others. Men with a higher
fWHR also reported being more accepting of casual sex and prone to
infidelity.
The average ratio was about 1.6 in study one, and 1.8 in study two, Arnocky told the Daily News.
Earlier studies into facial structure and testosterone have associated a high fWHR with odds of being racist and aggressive.
While the findings suggest that facial characteristics convey important
information about human sexual motivations, more research must be
conducted to determine the strength of the effect, Arnocky told The
News.
“You can’t walk down the street and see someone with a short, wide face
and know with certainty about their sex drive,” he added. "The fWHR is
not the end all, be all. There are social and cultural factors at play.”
The study was published in Springer’s journal Archives of Sexual Behavior.
