Mon’Ami showcases designs for Queen Moremi

As preparations for the hosting of
this year’s edition of Queen Moremi Ajasoro (QMA) Cultural Beauty Pageant
gathers momentum,
global audience at the recently held Africa Fashion Week
London, had a rare view of some of the designs for the beauty pageant with the
headline designer, Larry Kay Ojomo of Mon’Ami Clothing, displaying a rich
collection of the designs as part of his repertoire for the London show.
The renowned Nigerian designer said
he was elated and privileged to work on the collections for the pageant, which
is billed to hold in November in Lagos. He disclosed that it is this kind of
assignment that he has passion for because he enjoys it as it task his creative
prowess.
He revealed that he has to delved
into the history of the people of Ife and that of the personality and exploit
of Queen Moremi so as to be able to bring to the fore some of the unique and
innate qualities of the queen.
He disclosed that his designs have
creatively combined some of the rich elements of the queen, which, as the
designs portray womanhood and power, royalty and a little bit of modern feel to
emphasis infusion of the old and the use of colours to portray Africa prints.
The overriding presentations would
be that of angelic clothing, said Mon’Ami and dresses that have capes. ‘‘These
are some of the things that people should look forward to in our collections
for the beauty queens.’’
Speaking on this development, the
Heritage Ambassador, Legacy of Moremi, Princess Aderonke Ademuiluyi, who is
spearheading the beauty pageant project as one of the activities designed to
celebrate the legendary queen of Ile-Ife land and immortalise her legacies,
revealed that the veteran designer has in his designs underlined the reason for
his choice as the headliner designer.
‘‘His ability to create pieces
that have not been done before,’’ said Princess Ademuiluyi informed his choice,
adding that ‘‘he can create designs from the old and bring them to the new era.
He recreates old fashion into modern fashion, which ties in with our mission of
QMA initiative to create projects that will boost the legacies of the queen.’’
Already, there is excitement in the
air since the unveiling of this second edition of the pageant, which debuted
last year. Young ladies between the ages of 18 and 25 with either parents from
the South West and fluent in both Yoruba and English as well as possessing a
minimum of school certificate, of five feet and five inches tall and well –
mannered, are expected to contest for the coveted crown with auditions slated
for Ife, Lagos and Ibadan while the grand finale is to hold in Lagos sometime
in November.
The Ooni of Ife has already
committed N5 million towards the purchase of 1, 000 application forms for
contestants while corporate bodies and various institutions across the country
are lining up support and sponsorship of the event.
