Kids who see their parents get sloshed — or, for that matter, just
drink in moderation — can end up feeling anxious, embarrassed and even
be less likely to get to bed on time, according to research from the Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS).
The findings are eye-opening, considering that 51%
of parents reported
having been tipsy in front of their child. And 29% of moms and dads
involved in the study — carried out with the Alcohol and Families
Alliance and Alcohol Focus Scotland — reported that they thought boozing
in front of the kids was harmless.
“It is worrying that the majority of parents reported being tipsy or
drunk in front of their child,” Katherine Brown, the IAS’s chief
executive.
On other hand, only 16% of parents have felt guilty or ashamed of their parenting as a result of their drinking.
Children were so impacted by their folks’ boozing, that 15% of children
involved in the study asked their folks to go easier on the alcohol.
And 12% of youngster in the survey said their parents paid them less
attention because of their drinking.
Results were determined through a survey of 997 adults and their
children around the UK. All the parents said they consumed no more
alcohol than a drink or a glass of wine a night — amounts considered to
be moderate.
“All parents strive to do what’s best for their children, but this
report has highlighted a troubling gap in their knowledge,” said Brown.
