Actress Fit, 33, reprises her role as the one-liner slinging singer in “Pitch
Perfect 3,” opening Dec. 22, as the Barden Bellas head aca-cross the
pond after college graduation for a European reunion tour.
Prior to filming her first “Pitch” movie, Fit tells Viva she sat down
with director Elizabeth Banks and set boundaries for Flo that would
steer clear of Latino stereotypes: No other characters could mock her
English, and Flo couldn’t be oversexualized.
“I was like, OK, if we’re going to do this, we’ll make her dark,
sarcastic and just really kind of morbid, which I thought was
different,” says Fit, who is of Cuban heritage and grew up in the Miami
area. “I wanted Flo to just be a natural part of the group and not have
to rely on ‘In my country’ jokes.”
Though some of Flo’s lines from the 2015 film hold a bit more weight in
the current political climate — such as a joke about deportation — Fit
says that’s just Flo “messing with” her fellow Bellas.
“I get why some people were uncomfortable with some of the things (she
said),” Fit says. “But she was just making fun of their ‘white girl’
problems…In my mind, she’s just messing with them.”
As for moviergoers who have a problem with Flo’s thick accent, the actress says they need to “get over” it.
“People who are upset about Flo having an accent, it’s all
justified…she’s coming from a different country, she’s a foreign
exchange student. She’s not going to speak English without an accent,”
Fit says.
“What’s wrong with having an accent?I have so many friends who have
accents growing up in Miami, especially, that were nervous to talk
English in front of people because they were scared that they were going
to be made fun of. And I’m like, ‘No, it’s OK!’…So people that get mad
about having (the) accent, I’m just like, get over yourself.”
For Fit, whose breakthrough came on the ABC soap “General Hospital” 10
years ago, the “Pitch Perfect” films have been the perfect opportunity
for her to proudly flaunt her Latina roots.
“When I see the young girls who say (the movie) ‘changed my life,’ it
just makes it so worth everything,” Fit says. “So I want to continue to
help and inspire girls who look like me to see themselves on screen.”
