The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has apologised to the people of Benue State over his remark that the killings in the State by suspected killer herdsmen were a result of ‘communal clashes.'
Idris was forced to recant at a stakeholders meeting in Makurdi, the state capital. The explosive meeting had Governor Samuel Ortom and the Tor Tiv, DIG operations, Habila Joshak, two commissioners of police for Benue and Nasarawa states in attendance, with Idris being literally forced by the participants to tender an open apology.
Ortom, who addressed the meeting, blamed the police and other security agencies for ignoring his desperate call for help, when he found that the herdsmen were planning to attack his people.
