The seven-hour procedure on shopkeeper Santlal Pal took place on February 14.
Pal, 31, spent three days post-op on life support. In addition to
cutting away the growth, doctors had to remove skull bone that had moved
into the brain.
“The tumor was so big that it appeared as if a second head was mounted
on top of the patient’s head,” Srikanth Balasubramaniam, a senior
surgeon wh
o was part of the operating team, told DW news service.
Pal, who lives in the northern state of Uttar Paradesh, has been living
with the enormous mass on his head, watching it grow for three years.
He was reportedly told by three other hospitals that the tumor was inoperable.
During that time he suffered from chronic headaches and vision loss. Doctors expect Pal’s vision to improve.
“The patient has made good recovery and is now ambulatory and on full
diet,” said Kadkarni.
“He feels relieved of a large burden on his head.”
