The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer has begun repaying the Spanish government for the back taxes she owes, according to local media.
Shakira, 41, is under investigation for allegedly failing to pay income
taxes from 2012 through 2014.
In 2015, she claimed that she, boyfriend
Gerard Pique and their two sons moved from the Bahamas to Barcelona, but
tax authorities believe she was already living in the Spanish city.
She claims she spent most of that time abroad and didn’t intentionally hide her income, according to documents obtained by El Periodico.
Shakira recently postponed her El Dorado World Tour until June.
“To my dear fans and friends, I wanted to write one more letter to
express my gratitude to all of you for the immeasurable love and support
that you have sent me these past few weeks,” she wrote on Instagram in
December.
“You have made me feel that my voice is not only mine but also yours,
and that it has a purpose. There were times when your prayers and
messages of affection and encouragement along with those of my family
were the only thing buoying my spirits.”
