Foremost African Financial
Institution, Guaranty Trust Bank plc (GTBank), has announced the
commencement of Season 9 of the GTBank Lagos State Principals’ Cup, the
largest grassroots competition in Africa.
GTBank has been at the forefront of
fostering community development and youth empowerment through the
sponsorship of grassroots football tournaments.
Over the past 8 years,
the bank has sponsored the GTBank – Lagos State Principals Cup with the
aim of identifying, nurturing and grooming young football talents in
secondary school through sports and inculcating in them the values of
excellence and fair play.
Season 8 of the Principals Cup
produced an exhilarating encounter with over 360 teams competing to be
the ultimate champions of the prestigious tournament. In the boys’
category, Ijaiye Housing Estate Senior Grammar School, Ojokoro defeated
Ikotun Senior High School, Ikotun 2-0 in a passionately contested match
to lift the highly coveted trophy. Isale Eko Grammar School, Lagos
Island, took home the championship in the female category after beating
Government Senior College, Agege 5-4 on penalties. The match had ended
0-0 at regulation time. This year, more than 370 secondary schools in
Lagos State comprising of girls and boys will compete in the 2018
edition (Season 9) of the Principals Cup competition.
Commenting on the Lagos State
Principals Cup, Segun Agbaje, the MD/CEO of Guaranty Trust Bank plc,
said, “We are proud to lead this initiative that provides an avenue for
students to showcase their talents and passion for the game of football
even as they remain committed to their academics.” He further stated
that “This competition paves the way for youths to cultivate their
sporting talents and aptitudes while fostering and building a healthier
lifestyle at a critical stage in their lives”.
Over the years, the GTBank Principals
Cup has launched the professional careers of several talented players.
In 2015, Yetunde Fajobi joined the Nigeria U17 Female Team – The
Flamingos- having played in the 2014 edition, where she powered her
school, Government Secondary School Agege to victory and emerged the
most valuable player of the 2014 season. 2012 MVP Stephen Odey also
starred the MFM FC in the Nigerian Professional League in 2016 where he
was the club’s highest goalscorer, before moving abroad to join Swiss
side, FC Zurich.
