Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Ibadan, was educated at Government College Ibadan, University of Ibadan and Balliol College, Oxford University.
He practised medicine for 60 years;
50 of those years as full Professor of Medicine. He trained and mentored thousands at home and abroad in medicine and medical care. He taught at Oxford and Harvard Universities.
Prof Akinkugbe pioneered the establishment of two critical clinics, hypertension and renal disorders at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Both firsts in Africa.
Post retirement from UCH,he established and ran Ibadan Hypertension Clinic for 20 years. At 85, he stands tall among global physicians & administrators, in integrity, reputation and accomplishments.
The world will miss his service as he hangs his stethoscope for good today at a first-of-its-kind ceremony at University of Ibadan where it all began.
Rather than measure heartbeats, Akinkugbe’s stethoscope will become a precious museum piece.”
