From time to time you will be asked to work for free or next to nothing.
Here are some reasons to say “NO.”
It devalues your work, time and abilities, and that of competitors too. Why
should clients pay when someone will do it for free? If you don't value your time, no one will.
If you accept unpaid work, you set a precedent and make it difficult to negotiate a fair price on a future project.
Naturally, you will give precedence to paid work. Over time, the quality of unpaid projects may suffer; it will show.
The usual argument is that
“it looks great on your portfolio and gets you exposure.”
Can you quantify exposure?
Good reviews?
More likes?
More followers?
New work?
Can you cash in “exposure” to pay rent, household bills, educate and feed your family?
So...should you ever work for free?
Absolutely.
Some work brings exposure.
You need to gain experience and build your brand; so on a case by case basis, weigh it up; always think strategically.
Close friends and family: Be conscious of emotional blackmail and being taken advantage of.
Volunteering, charity work: Do something you’re passionate about and that is aligned with your brand
