There’s a new reason to ditch diet soda.
Drinking
two or more artificially sweetened beverages a day has been linked to
an increased risk of stroke, coronary heart disease and early death,
according to a new study published in the American Heart Association's
medical journal, Stroke.
The
study looked at self-reported info from nearly 82,000 women ages 50 to
79 years old from the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study,
whose health statuses were tracked for nearly a dozen years on average.
Only 5.1% of the women reported downing two or more artificially sweetened drinks per day.
Those
who did had a 23% higher risk of strokes, 29% higher risk of heart
disease and were 16% more likely to die earlier than those who drank one
or less such beverages a week.
“These
new findings add to the potentially harmful association of consuming
high quantities of [artificially sweetened beverages] with these health
outcomes,” the study reads.
