Lagos Meets School Administrators in Preparation to September 9 Resumption

NIGERIA-LAGOS - The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led Lagos State Government Thursday met head teachers of public primary schools in the state with a call on the school administrators to be prepared to surmount the challenges in the sector.

Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, who addressed the head teachers at the NUT Pavillion, Alausa in Ikeja, maintained that the roles of the various school administrators go beyond academics but also entails shaping and reshaping the destiny of the school pupils.

She told the teachers that the dignity of the teaching profession should be sustained, saying the quality of the teachers would visibly reflect in the competence of pupils and students produced from the various schools.

“By your designations, pupils’ first contact and tutelage as students start with you. You mould them in academics and conduct into the type of students that excel and go for higher education and beyond. I must confess that we have a herculean task to perform by shaping and reshaping the destiny of millions of lives who ultimately become our pride, pride of the nation and generations to come,” Adefisayo said.

The commissioner recalled that the governor had identified the need to invest in the education sector more than before by increasing the budgetary allocation to the sector, adding that the present administration would also empower teachers in every local government and strengthen their capacity to deliver quality education.

Adefisayo noted that since the Sanwo-Olu administration had given the assurance that most of the envisaged challenges in delivering quality education in the sector would be met, all hands must be on deck to complement the efforts of the state government.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Oluremi Sopeyin, urged the administrators not to rest on their oars, saying more is still expected of the teachers to nip in the bud all forms of social vices among school children across the state.

He added that the state government had also expressed readiness to key into the Federal Government-initiated Home Grown Feeding programme, hinting that the programme is expected to kick-start when schools resume.

Sopeyin added that apart from instilling formal education in the children, the teachers shoukd also show concern for the safety and security of the students, stressing that SUBEB had already met officials of the Lagos State Neighborhood Agency (LSNA) to complement the security of the various schools across the state.
