Twenty prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), alongside one civilian, who were abducted in Imo State on October 1, 2026, have been rescued following a coordinated security operation on duty.
The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, towards NYSC
orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom
States when they were abducted along the Owerri–Onitsha Road, reportedly around the Umunoha/Ogbaku
axis. They remained in captivity for several days before rescue team were able
to reach them.
The rescue was carried out at approximately 4:28 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, at Amakohia Ubi Village in Owerri West Local
Government Area of Imo State. The operation involved the Nigeria Police Force, Military, Department of State
Services (DSS), and other security agencies, working through sustained
search-and-rescue efforts.
Following their recovery, the victims were taken
for medical assessment and necessary care at a DSS medical facility in Owerri. The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, also visited the rescued prospective corps members at the facility, accompanied by senior security officials in the state.Security agencies have continued efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the
abduction. Authorities have not publicly disclosed sensitive
operational details, including the precise tactics used during the rescue,
while investigations remain ongoing.
