Scientists discovered way to "Steer" the Immune System to Kill Cancers

Scientists believe they have discovered a way to "steer" the immune system to kill cancers.

Lung cancer
Researchers at University College, London have developed a way of finding unique markings within a tumour - its "Achilles heel" - allowing the body to target the disease.
But the personalised method, reported in Science journal, would be expensive and has not yet been tried in patients.
Experts said the idea made sense but could be more complicated in reality.

However, the researchers, whose work was funded by Cancer Research UK, believe their discovery could form the backbone of new treatments and hope to test it in patients within two years.

UK Scientists get go-ahead to GENETICALLY MODIFY human Embryos.

It is the first time a country has considered the DNA-altering technique in embryos and approved it.
The research will take place at the Francis Crick Institute in London and aims to provide a deeper understanding of the earliest moments of human life.

 Blastocyst
It will be illegal for the scientists to implant the modified embryos into a woman.
But the field is attracting controversy over concerns it is opening the door to designer - or GM - babies.
DNA is the blueprint of life - the instructions for building the human body. Gene editing allows the precise manipulation of DNA.

Surgeon makes Tumors Glow, Aids in Surgery with New Technology.

A completely successful cancer operation may soon be just an injection away.

A trial on cancer patients at Duke University Hospital found that patients injected with a blue liquid made their cancer cells glow, making the surgery easier. Scientists have developed a way to make cancer cells glow so that surgeons can remove every last one of them while the patient is on the operating table.

"A surgeon can see the main tumor mass but even when they think they have got it all ... there can be microscopic cancer cells left behind," said Dr. David Kirsch, a radiation oncologist, professor at Duke and an author of a study published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

First Penis Transplant in U.S. Injured Soldier to receive it within 12 months: scientists

The first penis transplant in the U.S. will take place within the next year, according to scientists.

Surgeons at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore hope to perform penis transplants within the next year.
Surgeons at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore are currently screening patients for the complicated procedure.
The historic first recipient will be a young soldier injured in a bomb blast in Afghanistan, where such injuries are common.

Unusal Extra or 'Leap' Second by June 30: NASA

June 30, 2015 will officially be a bit longer than usual because an extra second, or 'leap' second, will be added to the day, according to NASA.

Strictly speaking, a day lasts 86,400 seconds. That is the case, according to the time standard that people use in their daily lives - Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC. UTC is "atomic time" - the duration of one second is based on extremely predictable electromagnetic transitions in atoms of cesium. These transitions are so reliable that the cesium clock is accurate to one second in 1,400,000 years.
