Network Investment pays off for Vodacom

MOBILE communications company Vodacom on Wednesday reported an 8.7% rise in group revenue to R21.741bn for the quarter to December 31 2015.
 
Group data revenue for the quarter increased 27.5% to R5.52bn, while group active customers grew by 6.8% to 65.2-million and active data customers by 14.5% to 30.3 million.
South African service revenue was up 7.2% at R12.707bn, with international service revenue increasing 15.4% to R4.581bn.

Some mobile users are also unable to read or post tweets to the network, which has over 300 million active members.

VODACOM changes tack on Neotel tie-up

South Africa -  After more than two years of pursuing fixed-line phone provider Neotel, Vodacom has asked for more time to restructure the R7bn deal.

The parties now have two weeks to agree on a new structure before presenting it to the Competition Tribunal on December 7. This will be followed by a closed pre-hearing three days later.

Airtel Nigeria Launched smart trade-in service

Telecommunications service provider, Airtel Nigeria, has launched a new service which enables customers to trade in their old phones for brand new Smart phones.
 
The service, tagged Airtel Smart Trade-In seeks to fulfil the desire of customers to own premium smart phones by simply visiting any designated Airtel showroom to trade-in their old phones. The old phone traded is valued and the amount discounted from the cost of the new purchase.

Etisalat, Africa’s IHS in Nigeria tower sale/leaseback deal

The Nigerian affiliate of Etisalat has completed the transfer of 555 telecom towers to Africa’s IHS, the second tranche of a sale and leaseback deal announced last year, the Gulf’s biggest telecommunications operator said on Monday.

The deal, for which no financial value was given, is part of Etisalat’s strategy to improve the quality of its network and to accelerate the roll-out of 2G, 3G and 4G coverage in Nigeria, Etisalat said in a statement.

Airtel subscriber base in Nigeria rises to 30 Million


Airtel Network, the world’s third largest telecommunications services provider with operations in 20 countries across Africa and Asia, today announced a significant milestone in its African odyssey when it acquired its 30th million customer in Nigeria. 
In acquiring 30 million subscribers in Africa’s most populous nation, the company ,has hit another milestone of achieving a 20 percent market penetration in the country.

Etisalat, Airtel Emerge Biggest Gainers of Number Porting Scheme

The Nigerian affiliate of Etisalat, the Gulf’s biggest telecoms operator, and India’s Bharti Airtel, have again emerged the biggest beneficiaries of the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) scheme introduced by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) two years ago to address the issue of poor Quality of Service (QoS) by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), according to data from NCC.

The introduction of the scheme allows holders of Nigeria’s over 183 million active mobile lines to retain their phone numbers when changing from one operator to another due to poor services without losing their numbers.

A source informed that the American reality star’s agent was initially approached by multiple other networks to broadcast her transition story, but nobody wanted to pay the star more than two million dollars, New York Post has reported.
The source further added that the 65-year-old TV personality’s agent continued informal talks with other networks, and apparently E! came up with an offer of five million dollars.

Globacom tables $600m for Ivorian telco in regional expansion push

Competition in West Africa’s telecommunications market is expected to intensify following plans by Globacom, Nigeria’s national carrier, to acquire Ivorian mobile operator, Comium Cote d’Ivoire, in a $600 million deal, informed sources have said.
