Prostate Cancer
The President of African
University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, Professor Wole Soboyejo,
has disclosed that research has reached an advanced stage in inventing an
effective medicine for the treatment of cancer, compared to the treatment of
the disease through chemotherapy.

According to Soboyejo who
disclosed this at the opening ceremony of a five-day workshop on Nanomedecine
and Bio-Micro-Electrical Systems (BIOMEMS) organised by Federal University of
Technology, Minna in collaboration with AUST at the institution’s Bosso campus,
said the new method of treatment would give room for early detection.
The president said the new
method of treatment will have little or no side effect on the patients, adding
that unlike chemotherapy, the medicine is selective, saying when administered,
it goes direct to the region of the disease unlike the present form of
treatment which must go through all the blood vessels before attacking the area
of the disease.
He said while chemotherapy
has side effects like vomiting, weakness and loss of hair when administered on
a patient, the new method of treatment according to him, is devoid of any of
such side effects.
According to him, the new
method of treatment is also cost effective as the patient needs not take large
number of dosages of the medicine before it could go round the body to reach
the affected part.
He also stated that the
research for the new treatment which commenced eight years ago, had proven to
be effective after testing it on animals, saying very soon it will be tested on
human beings.
Soboyejo opined that
research work is still ongoing on how best to administered the treatment, when
it gets final approval to administer it on human beings, saying though the
administering has to be through injection.
He said, the workshop was
conducted with the aim of bringing the young scientist on board so as to be
able to contribute on research work on BIOMEMS.
