Abuja — The movie, "Streets of Calabar" is a
film that portrays Nigeria and especially cross River State to the
outside world as a good tourism destination. It also shows Calabar has a
state with adequate security as it was portrayed in the movie.
"Streets of Calabar" is a film shot both in England and Nigeria, and
was written and produced by Charles Aniagolu, who is best known
internationally as a former reporter, international correspondent and
news anchor on the BBC and CNN and as a producer and director of
television features, documentaries and commercials.
The film, which is a comedy thriller, filmed in December 2011 &
January 2012. It was also post produced in September and October 2012.
According to Aniagolu The film which was shot both in London and
Nigeria is meant the to take Nollywood to higher level, as with the
motive was to make it an international quality film with standard.
The movie was shot against the spectacular best of Cross River State has it is the best-developed tourism state in Nigeria.
He said, "Nollywood movies often tell a good story that ordinary
Nigeria or Africa can relate with, but the quality is often lost because
it doesn't meet international standard".
Commenting on the movie the Minister of Culture and Tourism Edem Duke
commended the producer and the writer of the film titled "Streets of
saying that he haven't see a Nollywood movie with a quality like
"Streets of Calabar", stressing that the quality was exceptional with
intriguing plot, the characterization, the story line, which he said was
a thriller.
The Minister, who was accompanied by some of his deputies in the
Tourism ministry, described Charles Aniagolu, the writer, producer and
co-director of "Streets of Calabar", as an extraordinary talent of
international repute, who has raised the quality bar for Nollywood
productions. "I think there is a lot that professionals in this sector
can learn from him and that is not humouring him in any way", the
Minister said.
"Streets of Calabar" is a story that centered on, Chuks Oti,
mixed-race 419 (advance fee fraud) scammer and illegal immigrant
recently deported back to his home country Nigeria from London. Once
home, Chuks wangles his way out of a possible jail term and ends up in
the holiday resort city, Calabar, living with his loyal, much younger
British girlfriend Margaret, who insisted on traveling with him to
Nigeria. Struggling against the demons of his past and torn by guilt
over his failure to live up to his parents' expectation, Chuks tries to
walk a straight path.
Starring: Rita Dominic plays a dual role in the film as De Don and
Sly. With a face hidden behind a mask and wearing a trademark red hat,
De Don is a calculating, vicious and unforgiving mob boss, with a heart
of stone, unmoved by the mental and physical suffering he inflicts on
anyone that disrupts his business dealings. Of course none of the other
characters in the movie know De Don is a woman and this twist is
revealed at the end of the movie.
Others include Wale Ojo, Anthony Ofoegbu, Maynard Eziashi, Keppy Ekpenyong, Lisa Kill and other.
