The San Antonio Spurs needed to do something that had yet to be done if
they wanted to close out the Western Conference Finals Saturday night.
Win on the road.
Win on the road.
They beat the Thunder the first two games in San Antonio,
and lost the next two in Oklahoma City. With the series tied up they routed the
Thunder once again when the series returned home for Game Five. Based off of
that trend the Thunder were due to win big Saturday night and for San Antonio
to win Game Seven.
Or they could just win Game Six in Oklahoma City.
With Tony Parker on the bench for most of the game icing his
ankle the road was not going to be an easy one for the Spurs. At the half they
were down by seven, but then a 37-20 third period put the Spurs up and in
control leading in to the final period.
Game over? Not quite! The Thunder bounced back to tie the
game up in the final seconds of regulation and send the game to overtime, but
than tragedy struck for Oklahoma City.
They couldn’t make a shot in overtime. Russell Westbrook made
the only shot from the floor for the Thunder (to go with four free throws).
“We started settling for too many jump shots,” Thunder coach
Scott Brooks said. “It just seemed like we couldn’t
get enough good looks at the basket. Defensively, they just had us scrambling
around.”
Tim Duncan’s second free throw put the Spurs up for good
108-107 with 1:23 left in the overtime en route to a 112-107 victory.
“I have to be honest, this victory is really sweet because
we know we played one hell of a team, and we take great satisfaction in that
since they’re so special,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said.
The win sets up an NBA Finals rematch from last year with
the Miami Heat. Game One will be Thursday night in San Antonio.
