A bus driver says he’s not sure he wants to get back behind the wheel
after an unhinged lunatic slashed him across the face while he waited for his
bus to get fixed on Saturday night in Brooklyn.
“I'm concerned about going back,” John Browne, 43, said, running his
fingers across the six-inch cut across the left side of the jaw. “I could have
lost my life. I have a family."
The father-of-seven was in uniform outside his B35 bus waiting for
mechanical assistance around 10:45 p.m. near Mother Gaston Blvd. and Hegeman
Ave. in Brownsville when a man and woman exited a car, he said.
The man yelled, “What are you looking at?” Browne said.
“He kept walking towards me, saying, ‘I'm talking to you. What the eff
are you looking at?’” he said.
In a matter of seconds he was face to face with the angry stranger.
“At first I thought he had punched me. I felt the blood coming down and
people started yelling, ‘He has a knife!’" he said.
The man ran away, but Browne said he was able to grab hold of the
slasher’s female companion until police came.
She smelled of alcohol, but wouldn’t divulge any information about his
attacker’s identity, he said.
Browne was treated at Brookdale Hospital and released at 3 a.m. after
getting seven stitches on the gash.
Authorities described the knife-wielder as a 5-foot-10 man with a slim
build, wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
Just last week, another B35 driver was punched in the face and beaten
up, a union official said.
Browne said he may ask for a day shift if and when he returns to work.
“Driving is my passion, my dream," the former JetBlue rep said. "Most
people I drive are good people. This was just random."
