Manhattanite Kira Kazantsev is only 23-years-old but the blond
bombshell is a scholar who speaks fluent Russian, advocates for domestic
violence, plans on attending law school and can sing a mean cover of Pharrell
Williams’ “Happy.”
Oh yeah, she also just won Miss America.
Here are six other things you need to know about Kazantsev, who just
completed New York’s three-peat as Miss America:
1. Miss New York is actually from California. The native beach babe
moved to the Empire State five years ago for college.
2. Boy, can this girl multitask. During the talent portion, she wowed
the judges as she sang Williams’ smash hit single while performing the popular
cups routine from the movie “Pitch Perfect.” She sat cross-legged on stage
banging a red plastic cup on the floor.
3. Kazanstev has beauty and brains. She triple-majored in Political
Science, Global Studies and Geography as an undergrad at Hofstra University in
Long Island. The pageant queen is headed to law school after she hangs up her
sash. She’s already been accepted into Fordham University’s Law School.
4. She’s trilingual! Kazantsev — a daughter of Russian immigrants —
speaks Russian and Spanish.
“I always enjoy spending time in the Russian-speaking community. It’s
like a home away from home,” she told Brooklyn Daily, a community newspaper.
5. Miss New York — make that Miss America! - is an advocate for
domestic violence victims after experiencing an abusive relationship in
college, where an ex-boyfriend stalked her and sent her degrading text
messages.
“You just feel alone. You feel helpless,” she told NPR adding that she
was unaware of outlets for women who were victims of abuse.
To combat her fight against domestic violence, Kazantsev volunteers
with Safe Horizon, a group that provides shelter for abused women.
6. Kazantsev's gorgeous champagne-colored evening dress was custom made
by New York designer John Paul Ataker.
