General Electric, a global technology
and infrastructure leader, has described it’s sponsorship of the CNN
MultiChoice African Journalist Awards as an avenue through which commitment to
professionalism and excellence is rewarded on the continent.
The president and Chief Executive
Officer of GE Nigeria, Dr Lazarus Angbazo said this is the basis upon which GE
Africa is supporting the annual awards.
A total of 28 finalists from 10
nations were on Saturday named as winners of this year’s Award in Dar el
Salaam, Tanzania. Kenyan Journalist, Joseph Mathenge, scooped the top prize for
his work "Images of Terror," which first appeared in Kenyan daily
newspaper, The Standard.
Nigeria’s Obinna Emelike, the
BusinessDay tourism and culture correspondent; and Olatunji Olalade of the Nation
newspaper were among the lucky winners this year. While Emelike won the Culture
Award, Olalade coasted home the MSD Health and Medical Award.
Apart from GE Africa, other sponsors
of the award are Coca-Cola; Ecobank, IPP Media, Tanzania; Merck Sharp & Dohme
(MSD); and A24 Media.
Satisfied with the outcome of the
award, Angbazo said he felt fulfilled with the quality of the entries received
for the award from all journalists who participated and with the results of the
contest. According to him, GE perceives Africa as a dominant force to reckon
with vis-a-vis the economic potential of the continent.
General Electric recently announced
in Washington during the US-Africa Summit $2bn fresh investments in Africa
through 2018, which was aimed at boosting commercial relations.
Angbazo said GE, which already has a
substantial presence in the continent, will target the investments on health
training programs in African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa,
and Ghana.
