From Grumpy Cat to Bill Murray's Photobombs
Celebrities are masters at making headlines, but some outdid themselves in 2014.
Hollywood awards season doesn’t officially start for a few weeks, but
we’d like to hand out some trophies to the stars that shone the
brightest — or fell the furthest — over the past 12 months.
MOST INSANE INTERVIEW: JADEN AND WILLOW SMITH
When 16-year-old Jaden told T Magazine in November that he wants “to be
the most craziest of all time,” it was clear he and his sister Willow,
14, were already there. The pretentious teens’ rambling Q&A would
make Kanye West proud, as they waxed about time — which Willow can make
“go slow or fast” because “it doesn’t exist” — and Jaden’s reading list,
“ancient texts; things that can’t be pre-dated.”
BEST IN SHOW: GRUMPY CAT
This sourpuss has something to smile about. The Internet sensation
reportedly clawed in $100 million this year (her owner denies it’s that
much). Since dropping her second book (“The Grumpy Guide to Life”) and a
music video (“Cat Summer”), and starring in a film (Lifetime’s “Grumpy
Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever”), this kitty is sitting pretty.
FUNNIEST FLUB: JOHN TRAVOLTA
The actor become a laughing stock after introducing “Let It Go” singer
Idina Menzel as “Adele Dazeem” at the Oscars in February. The screw-up
spawned a flurry of “Travolta-ized” name generators online, and arguably
made Menzel a bigger household name than the film “Frozen” did.
Runner-up: Kendall Jenner messing up her 5 Seconds to Mars intro at the
Billboard Awards, blaming the fact that she had to follow the
Teleprompter: “I’m the worst reader!”
BEST FIGHT: SOLANGE AND JAY Z
It was the smackdown seen ’round the world: Solange Knowles punching
and kicking brother-in-law Jay Z inside an elevator at the Standard
Hotel — as Beyonce stood by and watched. The Bey-Jay camp never revealed
what sparked the embarrassing May brawl following the Met Gala.
MOST NOTABLE NUPTIALS: GEORGE CLOONEY AND AMAL ALAMUDDIN
Hollywood’s most notorious bachelor put a ring on it. Clooney married
bombshell lawyer Amal Alamuddin in an extravagant Venice wedding that
featured a fully booked five-star hotel, and private boats to transport
guests along the city’s iconic canals. The bride wore a French lace
Oscar de la Renta gown adorned with jewels and pearls that the designer
made specially for her before his October death.
MOST FAN-FRIENDLY: BILL MURRAY
Murray was everywhere: and we don’t just mean starring in the comedy
“St. Vincent,” attending Clooney’s wedding and in a viral “Tonight Show”
sketch where he trained for the NYC Marathon in a tux. . He also
attended a “Bill Murray Ice Cream Social” thrown by an L.A. vendor,
volunteered as a ticket-taker for a Midwest Minor League Baseball team,
crashed a bachelor party and photobombed a couple’s engagement photo.
MOST OVERBLOWN INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT: LEBRON JAMES’ BRUSH WITH ROYALTY
To some, King James committed an embarrassing breach of royal protocol
when he put his sweaty arm around the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge
during a Barclays Center photo opp. The British press gasped in horror
at the NBA star taking such liberties with Kate Middleton, but the
Duchess graciously smiled the whole time.
BIGGEST FALL FROM GRACE: BILL COSBY
More than 20 women have come forward over the past six months accusing
the once-beloved TV dad of sexual assault (or attempted sexual assault),
including models Janice Dickinson and Beverly Johnson, and former “Law
& Order” star Michelle Hurd. TV Land has yanked “The Cosby Show”
reruns, Netflix has postponed his comedy special, and a string of the
comedian’s tour dates have been canceled.
MOST STRIKING TRANSFORMATION: BRUCE JENNER
Just call him Bruce Gender. The ponytailed Olympic gold medalist has
been embracing his feminine side by growing out and lightening his hair,
getting his nails manicured, and even reportedly having a procedure to
soften the appearance of his Adam’s apple. There are rumors Kim
Kardashian’s stepdad may soon take the transformation even further.
MOST UNDESERVED TITLE: TAYLOR SWIFT AS NY’S GLOBAL AMBASSADOR
The singer has lived in the Big Apple for a New York minute, yet the
city’s tourism agency named the Nashville-raised Swift this town’s
Global Welcome Ambassador. Adding insult to injury: her bland tribute
single, “Welcome to New York,” is so devoid of any Gotham character that
she may as well be singing, “Welcome to Denver.”
BIGGEST LOSER: MAMA JUNE
After Honey Boo Boo’s “Mama June” Shannon was rumored to have rekindled
her relationship with the man who was convicted and served 10 years in
jail for molesting her oldest daughter, TLC canceled her reality show
“Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” out of concern for the children’s safety.
BIGGEST CELEBRITY TRENDS OF 2014
PEVAGE: Kendall Jenner, Iggy Azalea and Joanna Krupa are among
the ladies who stepped out in thigh-high slits that show off their
pelvic cleavage.
SIBLING REVALRIES: Little sisters have been owning the
spotlight. Try keeping up with Kendall Jenner, 19, since her modeling
career took off. Nicole Richie’s sister Sofia, 16, just signed with
Select Model Management, and Suki Waterhouse’s sister Immy also inked a
modeling deal. Meanwhile, Dakota Fanning’s 16-year-old sis, Elle,
starred in “Maleficent” alongside Angelina Jolie.
FRENCH BULLDOGS: Stars like Hugh Jackman, Chrissy Teigen, Lady Gaga and David and Victoria Beckham have joined the pack of Frenchie fanatics.
LIFESTYLE SITES: Since Gwyneth Paltrow hit it big with GOOP,
other celebs (we’re looking at Jessica Alba’s The Honest Life and Alicia
Silverstone’s The Kind Life) have kicked off their lifestyle vanity
sites, including Blake Lively’s Preserve.us and Shay Mitchell’s Amore
& Vita sites that launched last summer. Reese Witherspoon is next,
with Draper James kicking off in 2015.
