A cell phone thief kicked a woman in the back, knocking her onto a
Bronx sidewalk, but he actually assaulted two people — she had a 3-month-old
child strapped to her chest.
Police identified the suspect in the Black Friday attack as Alonzo
Brown, 18. He remained at large Monday night.
Surveillance video filmed along E. Tremont Ave. near Bronx Park Ave. in
West Farms showed the suspect looking both ways, trying to find a mark, about
12:45 p.m. on Friday.
Suddenly the woman, with her child nestled against her chest in a
carrier, passed by. She was also toting a shopping bag. The suspect walked a
few paces behind her, according to the video. As she approached a sidewalk
scaffold, he broke out in a sprint and kicked her on a run in the back.
The woman, Odila Orozco, 24, fell to the pavement and rolled over, but
managed to shield the child as she fell, police said. The suspect grabbed her
phone out of her hands after she hit the pavement, and took off running.
The woman and her baby were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where they
were treated for minor injuries and released, cops said.
“Everything’s good,” she said in Spanish, according to CBS. “My baby’s good and
I’m good.”
Police ask anyone with information on Brown’s
whereabouts to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers tipline at (800) 577- TIPS. All
calls are confidential.
