This year’s Golden Globes marked the expiration date on reigning comedy
queens Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s three-year hosting gig — so naturally a slew
of A-list presenters treated the podium like an audition tape.
“Saturday Night Live” alums Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader set social
media abuzz with almost 10,000 mentions after riffing on famous lines from
iconic movies like “ET” and “Titanic.” Husband-and-wife team Chris Pratt and
Anna Faris parodied their professional conflicts, and Kevin Hart jokingly
accused animators of “smoking weed” as he presented the award in that category.
The next host may have a big mic to fill, but there’s certainly no shortage
of eligible candidates. Here’s how to handicap the race:
Talent: “Skeleton Twins” co-stars Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig
Best line: “Kids, I really — I gotta get back to my planet,” Wiig said, mocking
“ET.”
Pro:
The “SNL” credential suggests Wiig and Hader will at least be funny. And anyone
who saw them dancing in “The Skeleton Twins” knows these two work well
together.
Con:
Hader and Wiig tend to ramble on to sillier sketches and might not be able to
pull of the snarky one liners delivered by Fey and Poehler. They also laugh at
their own jokes.
Grade : A-
Talent: Chris Pratt and Anna Faris
Best line: “People don’t know this, but we have a mixed marriage. I’m CBS, he’s
NBC,” Faris joked. “But we plan to raise our children HBO,” Pratt chimed in.
Pros:
Faris did well hosting “The People’s Choice Awards,” and Pratt is a lot sexier
than Allison Janney.
Con:
This Hollywood hunk might be a pricy get. Pratt’s box office hit “Guardians of
the Galaxy” grossed over $772 million.
Grade:
B-
Talent: Kevin Hart
Best line: “The artists in this next category tell compelling stories through
computer clicks, brush strokes and imaginations fueled by weed,” Hart joked
Pro:
Hart, the irrepressible “Wedding Ringer” star, left co-presenter Salma Hayek
speechless with his fast-paced badanage.
Con:
Hart is a shameless self promoter — or, as a Sony exec put it, a “whore.” He
couldn’t resist spewing a disingenuous plug for his new movie: “My movie comes
out Friday ... [but] that’s not why I’m here here. I’m here for this. It’s not
about ‘The Wedding Ringer.’”
Grade: B
Talent: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Best Line: The “Seinfeld” star nonchalantly played along when Fey roped her into
the opening monologue: “Julia Louise-Dreyfus is here ‘cause she’s obsessed with
me... ”
Pro:
She’s not afraid to go with the flow. At last year’s Emmy’s, the “Veep” star
shared a passionate smooch on live television with “Breaking Bad” alum Bryan
Cranston after winning for best comic actress.
Con: She
might need someone like Cranston to be her wingman on stage.
Grade:
B+
Talent
: Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda
Best line : "Don't you remember that day on the set I picked up that old
rotary phone and said, 'One day people will be able to watch things on
this?'" Tomlin said.
"I thought you were just high that day," Fonda, 77,
responded.
"Two things can be true," Tomlin answered.
Pro
: There is no moral transgression to which Tomlin won’t admit — and which Fonda
hasn’t attempted.
Con
: This is the Golden Globes, not the Kennedy Center Honors — and glamor is a
young person’s game.
Grade:
B
